We spoke with producer Motohide Eshiro recently about all things Ace Attorney in anticipation of the new entry starring Phoenix Wright rival Miles Edgeworth.
Is Investigations a one-off experiment, or will the series continue?
Right now we don’t really have any plans to make a sequel for Ace Attorney Investigations. If fans request it, if we get a lot of feedback demanding a sequel, we may do that. But as for other spin-offs or anything like that, we’re not really considering it at this point.
Why did you decide to remove the courtroom scenes?
We moved the setting from the courtroom to the crime scene, and which allows for more varied gameplay, something new and different. You can directly control the character and move Edgeworth around the screen and walk him from location to location, so it makes it easier to investigate and examine things. Along with that we’ve created a new system of the Logic mode, and the Deduction mode – and this mimics Edgeworth’s [style] because he’s a thinking man. Even though we have no court scenes, we still have court scene-like scenes.
What’s the inspiration for the mysteries in Ace Attorney?
The director of Investigations is actually a big fan of mystery novels. He personally reads a lot of mystery novels and watches a lot of mystery and detective movies– plays detective and mystery games – so he’s got a lot of these ideas just in his head. But the biggest challenge for him is [environment] because in the Ace Attorney series it’s always a very unusual location. So for him it’s always a lot of fun coming up with new ideas about how to employ these strange locations or strange situations.
Will the series ever appear on other consoles outside of the DS?
At this point we don’t have any plans to sell it on any other hardware. At the heart of it, we wanted this to be an affordable game that people can carry around and play with them. It’s much better suited to something like the DS than a home console.
