Geeksphone and Mozilla announced today that they will be teaming up to release smartphones featuring Mozilla’s Firefox OS, offering two developer preview handsets that will assist developers in prepping for the release of the new platform. The units are expected to be available in February, and the cost of the units have yet to be revealed.
The two developer units, named the Keon and the Peak, are a bit different looking than the device that was showcasing Firefox OS at CES, but some of the specs are somewhat similar. Here’s what to expect from Mozilla’s new handset offerings:
A release of the Firefox OS in the U.S. has yet to be officially announced, but Sprint has tossed its hat into the ring by voicing support for Firefox OS. Manufacturers such as ZTE and Alcatel are backing the fledgling Firefox OS, as well as Spanish carrier Telefonica. Although official release dates of the public version of Firefox OS and hardware are still sketchy, Mozilla is definitely making progress towards the release of a new smartphone OS.
